So, anyone out there know where Shepherdstown is?
If you work in the Washington DC area and have ever gone out near Harper’s Ferry, WV there is a good chance you have also visited Shepherdstown, except possibly for rafters who never get past the second bridge near the junction of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers.
If you are a Russian diplomat who happened to participate in the Peace Talks many years ago in Shepherdstown you will remember the 4-way stop sign near the Bavarian Inn at the intersection of German Street and Rt. 480.
I moved to the outskirts of Shepherdstown in 2003 at the height of the housing boom. Since that time I have been lucky enough to move my DC office into my basement so I dont have to commute anymore on the MARC train. My kids go to local schools and I am even teaching at the local Shepherd University.
The reason I started this Blog about MY SHEPHERSTOWN is that I happened to find a wonderful British Cafe (soon to be Pub) called the Carriage House Cafe on the backside of Shepherdstown just off German Street. Actually if you are headed in or out of town using Rt 230 you will most likely pass the Cafe also located near one of our town’s drama theatres. I happen to teach in a nearby building and passed the Cafe just earlier in the week. My wife and I stopped in for lunch and today we had British Afternoon Tea there.
I asked the purveyor of the Cafe how long she had been open expecting an answer of less than a year. Carolyn Robel-Litwack answered that they were soon going to celebrate 3 years. UNBELEIVABLE!!! How could we have missed this incredible Cafe for 3 years?
Well, it seems that perhaps I need to blog about my town and perhaps I will have a chance to enlighten not only locals in the area what they are missing on S. Princess St. but also the world that may find themselves passing through or visiting the cultural capital of the Eastern Panhandle. I asked Carolyn if she gets visits from the British Embassy in Washington, DC. She said no one has ever identified themselves so far. Another UNBELEIVABLE answer.
So, here is my announcement to the world on WorldPress.com
